Blade Steel 1.5634 (AISI L6 75Ni8) is celebrated in bladesmithing communities as a robust and durable blade steel, essential for crafting high-performance cutting tools. The material is pre-hardened to about 45 HRC, but can be processed with good tools.
Perfect for making Damascus steel together with 1.2842 + 1.2235 for tough and razor-sharp blades.

Recommended use for

AISI L6 (75Ni8) is a versatile blade steel, meticulously engineered with precision and dependability in mind. Very flexible and therefore perfect for filleting knife and thin blades. Demonstrating its merit across a variety of environments – outdoors, workshops, and kitchens, it assures consistent, top-tier performance.

Damascus Steel

When incorporated into Damascus steel, AISI L6 (75Ni8) reveals a distinctive silver layers and emerges as a strong choice for blade makers desiring resilient strength and a visually compelling pattern in their work. It’s respected for its solid, sturdy attributes and is a favored choice for creating elite knives. Tip: If you need thicker layers, simply use the steel double or triple. 75Ni8 welds easily with itself!

Hardening and tempering

Direct hardening at 830°C, followed by tempering at 180°C for 1h, assigns AISI L6 (75Ni8) a hardness approx. 60 HRC. For high flexibility tempering at 200 ° C = approx. 58 HRC.

Important info

Sourced in an annealed state, our steel arrives in expansive plates, typically measuring around 2x1m. Customization is made by trimming these plates into strips, optionally at 40 mm widths. Minor warping/bends from cutting is common yet can be effortlessly remedied using simple straightening methods (straighten them over the knee, with a vise, or hammer and anvil).
